Update on our Hyundai Getz’s fuel consumption

After we took Gina, our Hyundai Getz Philippines, to the shop for her 1000km checkup, I thought the Hyundai Getz fuel consumption would improve. The number to beat – at least as far as money is concerned – was Php1,500.00, which was how much we were paying for a week on our Toyota Revo.
After a few weeks, this is the rather dismal number we’ve come up with.
Our Hyundai Getz gets 10.8km/liter.
If that isn’t kick-you-in-the-crotch, why-the-hell-is-it-so-low horrific.
For a 1.1 engine, that’s abysmal. And I can testify to my own style of gas driving. I’m a great driver for fuel efficiency. I don’t floor it, I rarely exceed 3,000RPM, and I’m not a clutch driver at all. Most of the time, it’s been me driving, and I’m not exactly a lightweight at a little over 200lbs, but you’d think a 1.1 could deliver at least 12km/liter.
So, instead of saving money on fuel efficiency, we’re actually spending more, because we pay the same amount – Php1,500 a week – but get less power and legroom because we gave up our Toyota Revo for this.
Admittedly, I’m a little bummed. But I’m not the only one. Review what others had to say here and here.
So remember what I said here? Scratch that.

Hello, Nats! Thanks for passing by my Getz website.
I bought a bottle of Rain-X from the Concorde store at SM Megamall, but that was a few months back. You can buy similar products from most other specialty stores, including Blade or Ace Hardware, they’ll serve you just as well.

I bought one of the first 1.1 GL Getzs from the defunct Makati Pasong Tamo Hyundai for 399K as it was a bargain then and I expected better fuel economy than my old 1500 VW which I got rid of 25 years ago (I am 55). I consider myself a skillful driver, am very gentle on the gas and try to peg RPM at 2000, and can even time a shft without clutching but I cannot get 11 kpl on my car. My consumption is about 10.5. Only explanation for this is what I have concluded a long time ago – a small engine has to match the vehicle weight or it will strain with consequences on fuel economy. A 1.4 liter should be more like it.
You have the model with the newer styling with the front end that looks like a Peugeot.. My car does not have rear wipers and washers and I had pay for the rear shelf or tray. Overall, though, the car is a nice and spacy little job for occassional and weekend driving. It screams a bit at high rev and the airconditioner has a funny ticking sound when the engine is at idle.

Hello, Vic! Thanks for swinging by my Getz website.
I actually think you hit the nail on the head. Even if an engine is designed for fuel economy, if the car itself is heavier than usual, FE will definitely suffer. I just didn’t think it would suffer so much.
Gina doesn’t have rear wipers and washers either. I actually don’t recall seeing a 1.1 Getz with those amenities. Perhaps the 1.4. I’m actually not a fan of the rear tray.
I also haven’t experienced the screaming or the ticking air-conditioner, so maybe I can expect those quirks to show up sooner or later. As long as it doesn’t affect Gina’s performance, I think I’ll be okay with it.

Hey, I did not really dump it but had to.
It was a 1967 black 1500 with a sunroof and a funny seat belt system that only had one strap across the lap that hooked up to a U-bar in the center. It even had an original Grundig am/fm radio with VW logos on the dials that drifted all over the band like a drunk cow. This came from Germany through Washington. D.C. then Thailand, then to the Philippines and it was pristine and authentic down to the plastic caps with “VW” on the pillars where the phospate dip was alowed to drain out at the factory.
Then one night when I was out of town my cousin decided to borrow my car and my maid gave him the keys without clearing with me. This was before mobile phone days. He managed to fall asleep (drunk?) at the wheel and rammed into a bus stop son Aurora Boulevard. He survived. I tried to restore the car but it was not the same and would never be. Had to sell it to someone who was into restoration and he saw the possibilities, so he gave me a good price. It went halfway around the world and from east to west in the U.S. so it was a good and faithful car that is probably in Beetle heaven.
I still salivate when I see a restored or preserved 1967 beetle and there are quite a few on the road. I will find one soon but it will really replace my “Lucretia” (Yes, I did give that beetle a name, but only that one…). I can work on a beetle myself, including full engine overhaul, but stop at transmissions.
I also have a Hyundai Matrix GL AT which has half the consumption of the 1.1 GL Getz but is spacious and stable for long trips out of town but not a parking hog in the city..

I am seriously considering getting a Getz as my run around vehicle. My Camry 2.4V and Escape 3.0 can only do 7 kms/liter tops. But reading that Getz get only 10.5 kms to the liter, I am wondering now whether its worth the sacrifice in comfort and maybe even safety if I get a Getz. The salesman in Hyundai showroom was claiming a 20 to 23 kms. per liter consumption. I did not believe this but I thougjht a 1.1L might be able to get 15Kms. Anyone out there experienced this a 15 kms. or better mileage?

I own a getz 1.1, fuel efficiency is poor for me too i hardly get over 9.5 Kmpl. (I’m in Bombay, the car is 8 months old). Taken to service twice but no improvement.
Hyundai makes good cars but not good engines

Just got mine 2 weeks ago and its going 10.5kpl as well. It is very disappointing considering an old 97 automatic camry can do the same with a little hypermiling.

I’m really sorry to hear that, Chris. If it makes you feel better, it will improve with a little age. Mine didn’t get 10.5 at the start; it was even less.

I bought my getz 1.4 A/T 5 mos ago. I was shocked! I didnt expect it to be fuel inefficient(at 6-7l/KM)… Is it becoz of my driving habits? I dont believe!!!…Can anyone comment on this?

I feel your pain, Bong. I own the same model and have been as frustrated as you are, now I’m past the rage. If it’s any consolation the fuel consumption dropped slightly after I took for a third scheduled check-up, so now it’s sucking down 6-6.2 l per 100 km at an average speed of 110-120 km/h on the highway and 9.6-10.7 in the city (AC on). The bastards lied through their teeth trying to sell it and we are the schmucks who believed them.

Ganns, you were right. My meter is now at 5000 km with an average of 12km/L on its last 1000 km – city driving and on Caltex e10.
I stayed away from racing (as much as possible) to keep the consumption down.
Going to change my oil to 5W-30 and see how it goes.
